Customizing the YY Cube

Part 4

Trial fitting the mobo and cards to make sure things fit. Card tabs are a little snug between the mobo and case. I may have to sand that area a little bit.

It wants to live!

Look at the size of that fricken' hole!

After removing the mobo, its time to get ready for some serious painting. I hung up drop clothes floor to ceiling to block out dust after thoroughly vacuuming the whole room and letting the dust settle overnight.

The paint fumes inside here are gonna be very concentrated, so I have my gas mask ready to go. You don't want to try this without one!

Alcohol, rubber gloves, and tack clothes stand by to help keep finger oil off the case. I masked everything very carefully as well.

Here it is after the first coat of blue went on. I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

Meanwhile, David is still not done making holes in his case. What's this? He's planning a little bit different mounting detail than my simple rubber molding. Radical industrial retro chic.

Look at all those fricken' bolts!

The case is sitting upside down, and it now has 3 coats of blue. I'm gonna color sand it a bit and then add a couple of coats of clear.

I'll be color sanding with 1000 grit and using the garden hose to keep it wet.

Who is that masked man? The filters on this thing were blue after I had finished shooting 3 coats. Good thing I had it!
I moved my case out to dry overnight so I can see how the blue is doing. Meanwhile, Dave is just finishing the masking job on his cube and will shortly spray primer.

And so, after touching up some of the overspray on the outside of the case and doing a little color sanding, I'm calling it good enough. It isn't perfect, but its pretty cool, and certainly a nice job for my first project of this kind.

As you can see here, I have installed the windows now too. The www.pcmods.com kit is straightforward, but tedious to install. Take it slow, stick with it, and eventually you'll get your window in.

Doesn't the blue go nicely with the black?

Thar Be Windows Here!

Look at the size of those fricken' windows!

I know you are getting at least as impatient as I am--after all, there's been a lot of web pages you had to wade through to get here! Be patient, though. We still have some details to attend to before we can bolt it together and fire it up. Besides, all the parts haven't arrived yet. I should get the remainder in the next day or two. Amazingly, the WTC disaster doesn't seem to have affected my deliveries much at all.

Here I'm painting some of the drive bays to match the case. I want everything that's part of the case proper to be blue, while attached items, like the power supply, will remain au naturale.

Time to Put Humpty Dumpty Back Together Again...
