Cozumel

Cozumel is a tropical island located off the Yucatan penninsula in the Caribbean sea. It is a Mexican territory, part of the state of Quintana Roo. It's primary attraction for tourists is the beautiful reef that divers and snorkelers delight in exploring. The reef off Cozumel is part of the second-largest barrier reef in the world, second only to the Great Barrier Reef of Australia. It extends south through Belize and on to Roatan. I've been to Cozumel on four occasions now. First, I stopped for a day there as part of a Caribbean Cruise. Our local friends Steve and Edna met us there and gave us an extra-special shore excursion that included diving with Rodolfo Soltero's Anita Divers. My second visit was as part of my month-long aerial exploration of the Caribbean when I spent a week diving and touring the island. More recently, I returned for a week with the whole family. Then, in 2002, we went back with Sorensen's for our fourth visit. It looks like Cozumel is shaping up to be an annual affair! |
We stayed at the Presidente Intercontinental, which is the nicest resort on the island. As you can see, its quite a beautiful setting. The water is actually quite a bit more blue-green than it appears in this picture. There's a great little beach that's perfect for a little snorkeling or a shore dive. Tanks are available in the thatched huts on the left for about $8.
There's also a great pool for when you don't want to get all salty and you need someone to serve you a margarita!

We enjoyed watching them gather from our 2nd floor balcony.
Eventually they grew used to our presence, and we were able to see Mama, Baby, and Papa Iguana all gathered together at once.
